No Contempt of Congress Charges for Former IRS Official Lois Lerner

We’re a few days late in reporting this, but it is still big news.  The Justice Department announced that it will not seek criminal contempt charges against former head of IRS Exempt Organizations Division, Lois Lerner.  We have chronicled the saga of Ms. Lerner, as the key figure in the IRS targeting of conservative 501(c)(4) groups.  As you may remember, it was Ms. Lerner who famously refused to testify before a Congressional committee, ultimately leading to Congress finding her in contempt.

The decision to avoid charging Lerner is no surprise, given how joined at the hip Eric Holder’s Justice Department is with the White House.  And given the likelihood that Ms. Lerner’s actions were coordinated with the Executive Branch, no one seriously believed DOJ would pursue charges.

No doubt she is breathing a sigh of relief that she got a pass by DOJ.  She remains under investigation, however, regarding potentially criminal activity in the “mysterious” disappearance of her entire email archive.

The reality is, Ms. Lerner was an enthusiastic participant in the weaponizing of the IRS against political enemies of the current administration.  That much isn’t in dispute…at least not by fair-minded people who have followed this story in detail.  And regardless of anyone’s political leanings, it should put a shiver down your spine.  If it can happen to conservatives in a liberal administration, what’s to stop it from going the other way should a Republican win the White House in 2016.  For the good of all citizens who cherish the rights of this great nation, the entire truth needs to be known and guilty parties punished appropriately.

But don’t hold you breath.
