YOUR FORM 990, HANDLED BY EXPERTS

Focus on your mission. We’ll handle the IRS.

IRS Form 990 is the information return that all 501(c) nonprofits must file annually. It covers your financial activity, governance, compliance, and programs — and it’s publicly available. Done right, it keeps your tax-exempt status secure, earns donor confidence, and protects your organization year after year.

WHY IT MATTERS

A great Form 990 does more than check a box.

Form 990 is not a good do-it-yourself project. For many filers, it’s significantly more complex than a corporate tax return. Errors and omissions are the primary cause of IRS audits of nonprofits. Here’s what filing well protects:

  • Your 501(c)(3) status. The IRS will automatically revoke your tax-exempt designation if you fail to file for three consecutive years. No warnings, no second chances.
  • Good standing with the IRS. A clean filing history is the foundation of every grant application, partnership, and audit.
  • Donor and grantor confidence. Form 990 is a public document. Major donors and foundations review it before writing a check — it tells your story.
  • Accurate financial reporting. Revenue, expenses, governance, compensation, and programs — all reconciled and ready to stand up to scrutiny.
  • Peace of mind for your board. No more wondering whether the return was filed right, on time, or at all.
Behind on a filing? You’re not alone, and you’re not out of options. As long as your status hasn’t been revoked, we can help you catch up and get back on track. If it has been revoked, we handle reinstatement too.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about Form 990 filing.

What is IRS Form 990?

IRS Form 990 is the annual information return that all 501(c) tax-exempt organizations must file with the IRS. It reports your financial activity, governance practices, compliance status, and program accomplishments. Because Form 990 is publicly available, it also serves as a transparency document reviewed by donors, grantmakers, and regulators. Learn more about Form 990 and its requirements.

Which Form 990 does my nonprofit need to file?

The version depends on your gross receipts and total assets. Organizations with gross receipts under $50,000 typically file Form 990-N (e-Postcard). Those with gross receipts under $200,000 and total assets under $500,000 usually file Form 990-EZ. Larger organizations file the full Form 990. Private foundations file Form 990-PF regardless of size. Not sure which applies? We’ll determine that for you.

What happens if my nonprofit doesn’t file Form 990?

The IRS will automatically revoke your 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status if you fail to file for three consecutive years. This revocation is automatic, public, and requires a new application to reverse. Even a single late filing can trigger IRS scrutiny and potential penalties. Staying current is essential.

When is the Form 990 deadline?

Form 990 is due on the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of your fiscal year. For calendar-year filers (January through December), the deadline is May 15. You can request an automatic 6-month extension using Form 8868, which moves the deadline to November 15 for calendar-year organizations.

Can I prepare and file Form 990 myself?

You can, but we strongly advise against it. Form 990 is significantly more complex than a personal or corporate tax return. Beyond financials, the IRS scrutinizes governance policies, compensation, program accomplishments, and compliance disclosures. Errors and omissions are the leading cause of IRS audits of nonprofits. Professional preparation by experienced tax professionals protects your organization.

What if my nonprofit is behind on Form 990 filings?

If your 501(c)(3) status hasn’t been revoked, you can file the delinquent returns and get back into compliance. We help nonprofits catch up on past-due filings every day. If your status has already been revoked, we assist with the IRS reinstatement process to restore your tax-exempt designation.

Is Form 990 a tax return?

Form 990 is technically an information return, not an income tax return. Tax-exempt organizations generally don’t pay federal income tax, but they are required to file Form 990 annually to maintain transparency and demonstrate ongoing compliance with IRS requirements for tax-exempt status.

Who reviews my nonprofit’s Form 990?

Form 990 is a public document. The IRS, state regulators, donors, grantmakers, watchdog organizations like GuideStar and Charity Navigator, journalists, and the general public can all access and review your filing. Accuracy and completeness directly affect your organization’s credibility and fundraising ability.
