Judge Orders IRS to Answer Questions Regarding Lerner Emails

The IRS has been ordered to answer questions on the status of certain emails of former exempt director Lois Lerner. The federal judge has ordered the agency to answer questions in response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the conservative educational group Judicial Watch.

As many of our readers know, Lerner was at the front of the scandal regarding the IRS’s targeting of nonprofit conservative groups for higher scrutiny of exempt applications. Many were hoping that the recovery of these emails would shine light on what IRS leadership knew about the targeting, but the IRS reported originally it could not recover many of her emails from the dates in question.

Late last year, however, it was discovered that thousands of these reportedly-missing emails had been found. The Judicial Watch request had covered the second set of tapes, and looked to find out whether all the recoverable emails had been turned over by the IRS.

The judge’s order gives the IRS until Friday, June 12th to respond to these questions.
